Synlogic Therapeutics, a Nasdaq-listed biotech firm led by Irish woman Aoife Brennan, is to cease operations and lay off almost all its staff after discontinuing a major drug trial.

Brennan is to step down as chief executive and president of the company after the decision was taken last week to halt trials for Synpheny-3, a potential treatment for phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare metabolic disease.
