What price something to sit on while supping the soup? In the case of eight George I walnut dining chairs due to go under Sotheby’s hammer in London this week, expect £50,000 to £80,000.
The design tells us that the original owner viewed his furnishings long term. Constructed with removable padded backs, the chairs are rare examples of early Georgian seat furniture conceived in the restrained ‘India’ manner (influenced by 16th-century Chinese chairs).
