If your building has good bones, don’t swap it for a younger model

Demolition and rebuild should be the very last option with commercial buildings past their prime, as many can be cleverly upgraded or repurposed

A key challenge facing owners of older commercial and public buildings is whether to sell them, upgrade them or demolish and rebuild them. Ronan Phelan, the new managing director of Scott Tallon Walker Architects (STW), a leading architecture and urban design company with offices in Ireland and Britain, believes that upgrading existing buildings presents a “great opportunity for architects who have the skill sets to address all the issues”.
