Tennis, in one form or another, has been played for the last 800 or so years. It was invented by monks in northern France in the 12th century when, with rackets not yet in use, the ball was struck with one’s palm, lending the game its moniker: jeu de paume, or game of the palm. It would be another 400 years or so before the idea of using a racket was borne.
