The ballot that gives reform a bad name

The recent trial of Gail O’Rorke reignited the issue of assisted suicide, and specifically whether it should be a criminal offence to help a terminally ill person end their suffering by taking their own life.

In the Dáil last Friday, deputies debated the repeal of the 8th (Pro-Life) amendment to the Constitution – the latest instalment in Ireland’s long-running dispute with itself on the abortion issue. The constitution still recognises the special duties of women in the home.
