Pushing the Catalan cause feeds into the Sinn Féin narrative that people living in the North should also be allowed to have their say on a United Ireland in a border poll

There has been a general expression of horror across the Irish political establishment at the scenes of Spanish police attacking voters during the Catalan independence referendum. The images which have been shown are more reminiscent of the General Franco’s dictatorship rather than the return of Spanish democracy after his death in 1975.
