McDonald’s election as leader of Sinn Féin symbolises the transition under way within the party. But she faces a slew of challenges right away, including the proposal to repeal the Eighth Amendment

It may have evoked deep cynicism among their political opponents, but something quite remarkable happened at the RDS yesterday. Sinn Féin members broke a 35-year cycle of electing the same man as their leader to vote instead for a 48-year-old woman from Rathgar who was privately educated and was once a member of Fianna Fáil.
