It may have evoked deep cynicism among their political opponents, but something quite remarkable happened at the RDS yesterday. Sinn Féin members broke a 35-year cycle of electing the same man as their leader to vote instead for a 48-year-old woman from Rathgar who was privately educated and was once a member of Fianna Fáil.
