Sinn Féin has defended the disputed election of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro by comparing it to the Irish presidential election and hitting out at an “orchestrated coup” in the country.

The Irish government last week followed a number of other EU countries in recognising opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the interim president of Venezuela and called for “free, fair and democratic presidential elections”.
