Sabina Higgins, the wife of President Michael D Higgins, has insisted that her controversial letter calling for a ceasefire in Ukraine was written “in a personal capacity”.

She has been criticised by Irish and Ukrainian politicians for writing a letter to the Irish Times last week saying that until the world persuades Russia and Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire and negotiations, “the long haul of terrible war will go on”.
