Hopes have been raised that a debt negotiation in the eurozone periphery could become a possibility. But numerous factors stand in the way

The prospect of the election of a government in Greece led by the reformist Syriza party, which has promised to make debt renegotiation a central plank of its programme, has again put pressure on the relationships at the heart of the eurozone.

“Partnership” is the shibboleth among Eurocrats for relations between members of the ever-closer union. For many in the “periphery” countries, partnership has often felt more like coercion.
