Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was concerned that a pro-life candidate might run in the presidential election to obstruct the abortion legislation, according to private text messages.

He was in touch with Midlands-North West European election candidate Fidelma Healy-Eames, who quit Fine Gael in 2014 after opposing the legislation to allow for abortion where a pregnant woman was at the risk of suicide.
