Angela Merkel saved the euro, but her moral response to the migrant crisis was both her Achilles heel and arguably the biggest act of bravery in her political career

The public portrayal of Angela Merkel during the financial crisis was of a woman who was intransigent. In countries worst hit by the crisis she was accused of imposing German values and worldview on their systems of governance, economy and politics. The picture painted of Merkel was one of someone unsympathetic to the plight of ordinary Europeans and uncompromising in the reforms and cuts she demanded.
