The public portrayal of Angela Merkel during the financial crisis was of a woman who was intransigent. In countries worst hit by the crisis she was accused of imposing German values and worldview on their systems of governance, economy and politics. The picture painted of Merkel was one of someone unsympathetic to the plight of ordinary Europeans and uncompromising in the reforms and cuts she demanded.
