For FF and FG the name of the game is survival
As the new year warms into spring, not one, but three political big beasts have suggested the once-unimaginable: that the time has come for Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to entertain the notion of entering into coalition next time around.
The remarkable thing is that this suggestion has not set off uproar in either party. Significantly too, the suggestion has been floated by three men who all have leadership ambitions within their own parties: Fine Gael’s Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney, and Fianna Fáil’s John McGuinness. Almost the only negative public reaction has come (predictably) from Fianna Fáil’s Éamon Ó Cuív.
