Flanagan says ‘tolerance and diversity’ reflected in blasphemy vote

Voters overwhelmingly backed the proposal to remove the blasphemy ban from the Constitution in the referendum held in tandem with the presidential election. It means that the Constitution will be now be changed to remove the requirement to legislate against blasphemy.

Article 40.6 of the Constitution currently states: “The publication or utterance of blasphemous, seditious, or indecent matter is an offence which shall be punishable in accordance with law.”
