The Mercosur trade deal has the potential to damage Fine Gael much more than the over-spend on the national children’s hospital ever did.

The party has been conscious for some time of the danger of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar being portrayed as an urbanite with little interest in rural Ireland. Hence the rolling tour of the country by the cabinet, with Donegal expected to be the next stop soon after Sligo, Cork and Kerry.
