‘Dying with dignity’ committee is to grapple with life or death dilemma

Chairman Michael Healy-Rae insists he will put his ‘pro-life’ views to one side in the interests of fairness but opposing views could scupper any consensus

Michael Healy-Rae, the colourful Independent Kerry TD insists he is going to put his ‘pro-life’ views to one side while he is in charge of the process to decide on whether the state should legalise assisted dying.

As chairman of the cross-party Oireachtas committee, Healy-Rae will have to get a consensus within its nine-month deadline about what recommendation to make on a true “life or death” issue.
