Brexiteers marching on towards destruction due to a misguided ‘Dunkirk spirit’

Rather than evacuating in the face of overwhelming odds, Conservative Party MPs still seem determined to fight the EU on the beaches

The Collins Dictionary defines the ‘Dunkirk spirit’ as fortitude and stoicism in a demanding or dangerous situation.

The evacuation of 300,000 British troops was portrayed in the British media as a triumph.

But that was a brilliant re-writing of history because they had been beaten back to the coast of France by the invading German army. Even Winston Churchill said that the events leading up to Dunkirk were a “colossal military disaster".

There is a danger that too many British MPs, who will have to vote ona series of proposed amendments to the Brexit withdrawal treaty today, are driven by a misguided 'Dunkirk spirit'.
