Ministers for finance in general do not mess around. They have the big ministry, the one with the purse strings. They command the respect of their fellow ministers and the public for the simple reason that they exercise the most important function of the modern state: taxation and expenditure. Ministers for finance are at the pointy end of every important policy, from childcare to roads to higher education. Ministers for finance are lobbied constantly for spending increases here and tax changes there.
