Today I want to talk about Ireland’s charities.
Charity as an institutional idea began in 1860, at least in Ireland, and it began in a serious way in the 1980s. As the chart shows, the initial trickle of charities between 1860 and 1980 became a torrent after the 1980s. This was partly because of changes in the tax system, and partly due to increased government funding of the sector. The chart shows the explosion....
