When it comes to accountability, our politicians need to follow the lead of Roman engineers
When it came to making public servants accountable for the quality of their work, the Romans did not need to resort to judicial review. Legend has it that when their engineers finished building a bridge, they were required to stand under the arch while the scaffolding was pulled away. If the bridge collapsed, then the consequences of such failure would, in a very literal sense, fall on the shoulders of the engineers.
