Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has never been shy about much, least of all hisdisdain for European bureaucrats.

Yet the phenomenal growth of his airline - more than virtually any other company on the continent - closely mirrored the accelerating integration and expansion of the European project since the mid 1980s.

The march of the EU super state has been brought to a shuddering halt by Brexit.
