Our rules on political funding are actually fairer than most

The resignation of Offaly councillor John Leahy as leader of Renua now means that the conservative and pro-life political party is in receipt of €258,596 a year in public funding, but has no elected representatives to its name.

Under election funding rules, Renua qualifies for state funding because it secured 2.18 per cent of the national vote at the 2016 general election, just about passing the 2 per cent threshold required.
