‘Catholic’ and ‘nationalist’ may no longer be synonymous, as disillusionment with the South sees attitudes shift

In the recent election in the North, the unionist vote increased by 2 per cent and the nationalist vote declined by 3 per cent. It is difficult to be doctrinaire about what is happening here. Factors like turn-out, Sinn Féin’s continuing abstentionism and a first-time unionist pact in some constituencies may well have served to produce these figures.
