Ireland needs to have a Traveller voice in Leinster House

Provision needs to be made for a Traveller constituency, because identity politics does not have to come at the expense of someone else’s identity

The report on Enda Kenny’s statement recognising Traveller ethnic identity on the TheJournal.ie received 177 comments. Approximately 134 of those were hostile. (Of those that weren’t, only a handful were supportive.)

In a Claire Byrne Live/Amárach Research poll last year, just one in three people supported the recognition of Traveller ethnicity. A study in 2010 found that one in five people would deny Travellers citizenship.
