Two schools fraudulently claimed almost €400k each in meal scheme

Two schools were found to have fraudulently claimed almost €400,000 each in school meal payments, while another school was found to have over-claimed by €100,000.

The €50 million per year scheme provides free breakfasts and lunches to around 200,000 children who are mainly from disadvantaged areas.

But the government has begun a crackdown on what it believes to be fraud involving schools inflating pupil numbers to claim extra payments.
