Juncker cited political symbolism when backing €1bn electricity deal

Jean-Claude Juncker privately told Leo Varadkar that he was fully aware of the political symbolism in backing a €1 billion electricity interconnector between France and Ireland during the Brexit talks, The Sunday Business Post has learned.

The 550-kilometre sub-sea Celtic Interconnector, which was approved last month, will allow both countries to import and export 700 megawatts of electricity, the equivalent of supplying power to around 450,000 homes.
