Mediahuis to cut Irish Independent daily newspapers within decade: Vandermeersch

The head of Mediahuis said the company would shift focus to digital journalism and podcasts after announcing 50 redundancies on Tuesday

Peter Vandermeersch said Mediahuis was selling 600,000 newspapers in Ireland every week but that it would likely cut its midweek publications within the next decade

Peter Vandermeersch, the head of Irish Independent and Sunday Independent publisher Mediahuis, has said its Monday to Friday print newspapers would likely be cut within the next decade.

The Belgian journalist was speaking the day after the company told staff it was seeking to lay off 50 to 55 people through a voluntary severance scheme.

Half of the redundancies are being sought from editorial, with the remaining from the non-editorial part of the business. The voluntary severance scheme is the second sought by the publisher in the space of 12 months.
