Prescriptions for addictive painkillers up 1,000 per cent in a decade; one in ten medical card holders on sedatives, sleeping pills

Fears are growing of a silent epidemic of prescription drug addiction, witha Sunday Business Post investigation revealing a staggering rise in the use of sleeping tablets, painkillers, opiates and antidepressants.

Today, we can reveal a more than 1,000 per cent increase in the use of certain addictive painkillers in the last decade, with prescriptions for one drug, dubbed the new Valium, soaring from over 54,000 to over 652,000 in ten years.
