Ireland accounts for one-third of privacy fines issued across the EU

With many tech companies based in Dublin, the Data Protection Commissioner is a key regulator in the bloc

Ireland’s data protection watchdog gave out one-third of the privacy fines issued by European data regulators over the past year.

A new study from DLA Piper, the global law firm, found officials across the continent issued €2.9 billion in fines relating to data breaches and the GDPR, the EU’s privacy rules since 28 January, 2022. The survey covers all 27 EU member states, plus the UK, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
