The self-improvement industry will be worth $13 billion in the US alone by 2022. But do motivational summits, self-help books and life coaching sessions really make anyone feel better? Have we lost the ability to be okay with being just okay?

When Boris Johnson popped up as a keynote speaker at the recent Pendulum Summit in Dublin, it was not just the controversial appearance of a divisive Brexiteer and former British foreign secretary that had people talking. The cost of tickets - €795 a pop - also generated plenty of debate.
