At the height of his powers in the Bundesbank, Tietmeyer - who has died aged 85 - was the ultimate oracle, writes Catherine O'Mahony

It was the late 1990s and the venue was a hotel somewhere in southern Germany. The council members of Germany’s massively powerful Bundesbank had gathered together for one of their occasional out-of-town meetings, amassing, as ever, a sizeable entourage of security personnel and an even larger gang of business reporters. I was part of the Reuters crew in attendance.
