FAI plunged into fresh funding crisis over chief executive’s pay deal

Sports minister says there will be no discussion over extension of supports until latest payments row is resolved

FAI chief executive Jonathan Hill was in receipt of payments from the FAI of €12,500 in 2022 in lieu of holidays not taken, and €8,500 in the form of benefit in kind payments in relation to his commuting expenses, according to some reports.

The FAI’s efforts to secure an extension of its multimillion-euro government bailout hang in the balance after the revelations that chief executive Jonathan Hill’s payment package is in breach of its own rules.

Thomas Byrne, the junior minister with responsibility for sport, has said there will be no discussion about the extension of the state supports agreed in the wake of the John Delaney controversy out to 2026 until the matter is resolved.
