British prime minister Theresa May has confirmed that she plans to form a new government, with the backing of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party, despite falling short of a majority in the country’s general election.

May spoke outside Downing Street after a visit to Buckingham Palace for talks with Queen Elizabeth.

The uncertainty caused by the election outcome had an immediate effect on the value of sterling.
