Trade unions and an industry group have accused Eamon Ryan, the Minister for the Environment, of failing to take responsibility for trying to get Tara Mines reopened, after more than 650 workers were temporarily laid off due to the shuttering of the site.

Geoscience Ireland, which represents companies including mining and exploration firms, has written to Ryan criticising his response to the suspension of operations at the Co Meath mine, which will close on Friday.
