Commission calls for higher taxes ‘challenging’ - Donohoe

Expert group advises a shift in the balance of taxation away from tax on labour, but acknowledges that recommendations are being issued amid high inflation

Paschal Donohoe, the Minister for Finance, has said that the government will consider the “difficult and challenging” recommendations of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare.

The commission was set up last year due to concerns that the country’s current tax take will not be enough to pay for the higher pension and healthcare costs of an ageing population and the costs of reducing carbon emissions.
