Cork commuters have been availing of free travel thanks to out-of-date equipment on some Bus Éireann routes.

Bus Éireann confirmed that a number of its fleet in Cork are not equipped to take Leap card transactions. The National Transport Authority (NTA) said it was aware of the issue.

Industry sources said that the total cost to the company could run into the thousands, although the state-sponsored company insisted that losses were minimal.
