A border community living on a knife edge
It’s the only road trip in Ireland that passes the Ballroom of Romance and the traffic line used by IRA snipers as a guide for targeting British soldiers. Susan O’Keeffe travels from Sligo to Enniskillen to find out what locals feel about the threat of a hard border
If estate agents were describing the 67km road between Sligo and Enniskillen, words such as authentic and interesting would be called upon to dress up the bad bends and narrow spaces. They would definitely stress the breathtaking landscape and the unspoilt, uncrowded countryside. A touch of honesty might suggest that this is a largely forgotten area of both North and South, which brings a unique mix of benefits and challenges to local people.
