It’s not always been the case, far from it, but now is a good time to be an Irish pillar bank.

While this year’s results are not expected to exceed the blockbuster returns achieved in 2023, they are still in good health and for AIB the prospect of becoming fully privatised looks likely to be achieved in the near-term.

So it’s perhaps not hugely surprising that analysts, investors and even former Irish banking executives have suggested to the Business Post that AIB and Bank of Ireland could become takeover targets of wider European peers.
