Exclusive: Irish banks ‘attractive takeover targets’ for big European lenders

Ireland’s banks are strong targets for takeovers by larger European lenders given the low level of competition and strong economic backdrop, leading industry figures have said.

Alastair Ryan, an analyst at Bank of America, said Irish banks were ripe for being bought out by a bigger European peer given the favourable market conditions and the desire of the European Central Bank (ECB) for M&A activity in the sector.
