Aldi announces €15m investment in reverse vending machines as retailers prepare for scheme’s launch

Deposit Return Scheme machines will be used to facilitate the reimbursement of deposits on drink bottles and cans with a Re-turn logo

Aldi said it expects to facilitate the recycling of approximately 240 million empty bottles and cans per year through its compliance with the state-mandated initiative

Aldi has installed reverse vending machines in its 161 stores across the country at a cost of €15 million as retailers prepare for the launch of the state-mandated Deposit Return Scheme (DRS).

The scheme, which will go live on February 1, will see consumers who buy drinks in plastic bottles or aluminium cans with a Re-turn logo pay a nominal deposit of up to 25 cent in addition to the retail price of the drink.
