The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is now being classed as a severe risk to Ireland’s economy by the Department of Finance, the Business Post has learned, amid growing fears that emerging technologies may spark large-scale job losses in some sectors.

John McCarthy, chief economist at the Department of Finance, last week told a conference that AI now presents a “severe” vulnerability in the Irish economy in the medium to long-term.
