Facebook has called on the Department of Justice to modernise Ireland’s bugging laws.

Senior managers from Facebook and WhatsApp, the tech giant’s messaging app, met with officials in May and said that there was increasing pressure on internet companies to enable lawful interception of messages on their services.

Irish legislation relating to interception does not currently provide for lawful interception of email and other forms of communication over the internet.
