The idea that all Irish-Americans are Kennedy supporters and reliable Democratic voters is blarney – in fact, they’re some of Trump’s most loyal stormtroopers

One of the great myths of Irish-America is that the overwhelming majority of the 40 million-plus Americans who claim Irish ancestry are Democrats, or Kennedy-style liberals. More than 12 per cent of Americans describe themselves as first, second or third-generation Irish. And while the Democratic Party, particularly on the east coast, continues to rely on the Kennedy lustre to lure Irish-Americans into the fold, it has been having considerably less success of late.
