For all of the constant talk about ‘the death of cinema’, last year was another record-breaking year at the box office. In that light, it’s hard not to get excited about what 2019 might have in store for the big screen

After the perceived failure of his passion project Silence, Martin Scorsese couldn’t find a film studio to stump up the reported $200 million budget for The Irishman (September), so streaming service Netflix did, on Scorsese’s condition that they also release it in cinemas. The master director’s return to the gangster genre sees him reunited with Goodfella’s alumni Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci to tell the story of hit-man Frank Sheeran and mob boss Russell Bufalino’s involvement in the murder of corrupt union leader Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino).
