Let’s talk about porn

A recent report found we are suffering from a chronic inability to discuss porn in anything but extreme terms. Jessie Collins talks to its author Caroline West about why, in the face of mounting access and consumption, we still can’t talk about it

Look for explainers for the word porn and you get a pretty good insight into the confused attitudes towards it. Mostly the connotations are negative, ‘offensive’, ‘immoral’, ‘lewd’ being just some of the terms often used to replace it. It should not have been surprising then that when Enda Kenny called for a “national conversation” around porn in October 2016, it quickly descended into a double entendre-laden, fairly base discourse with the hashtag #endaporn quickly trending on Twitter.
