The wetlands of Brazil’s Pantanal are a tropical paradise full of exotic wildlife and incredible scenery

It’s a Garden of Eden, but with red for danger as we squint up into the tangle of overhanging greenery. The spiders’ webs touch my face when our flimsy canoe skims the lush riverside. Then a couple of submerged caimans – South American alligators – appear inches away above the surface, their protruding eyes glistening like marbles, before they duck down, leaving only a bubble or two behind.
