Just 14 men have led governments in this country since 1921. This year, one of those left office, another assumed it and a third, Liam Cosgrave, sadly passed away. When Enda Kenny announced his departure in May, under the shadow of yet another policing controversy, I wrote that that it was too early to judge him. I still believe that to be the case. Critics have labelled him lightweight. His advocates say he regained Ireland’s economic sovereignty. Both conclusions are overstated and over-simplistic. His demeanour – upbeat, positive, energetic – was a tonic that Ireland, scarred from austerity, needed upon his election as taoiseach in early 2011, but there is also a sense of missed opportunities about his premiership.
