‘Climate change is a slow-motion car crash’

Peter Thorne of Maynooth University was recently appointed to a key UN panel on climate change. He tells Elaine Prendeville how rising global temperatures will affect Ireland and what we can do to mitigate the risks

Could you outline your role in the global effort to combat climate change?

Aside from my work at Maynooth and various research [pieces] published internationally, I’ve recently been appointed as a co-ordinating lead author to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This panel ultimately informs the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which leads to things like the Paris Agreement; international agreements, that is, on attempts to mitigate climate change.
