Muse: could take themselves less seriously

Rock: Muse, Drones (Warner)

Matt Bellamy wanted Muse’s seventh album to be a return to basics, eschewing the grandiose drama of recent releases. If that was the aim, once they went into the studio with legendary producer Mutt Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard), something went awry. Drones is a big, bruising concept album, with themes of state indoctrination, abandonment, loss of hope and eventual revolution. It’s like hearing the latest young adult dystopian fiction distilled into song.
