Michelle Dooley Mahon is a successful writer who also happens to be autistic. Now 58, she went through most of her life without knowing why people saw her as different.

“When I was small, I felt alien and didn’t fit in anywhere,” she says. “At school I was bright and feisty, but had no friends. The seat beside me was a moveable feast as children came and went.”
